Manaslu Trek  -Larkye La Pass

Located forty miles east of Annapurna, Manaslu (also called Kutang), the eighth highest mountain in the world, dominates the Gurkha massif.  The name Manaslu is derived from the Sanskrit word Manasa meaning "Mountain of the Spirit".

 

Manaslu is one of the best places for adventure trekking and the cultural site. It can be define as trekkers' paradise. It lies on the eastern side from Annapurna area between Bhudhi Gandaki and Marsyangdi River. Opened in 1992, this area offers a combination of rich cultural heritage, unsurpassed beauty and biological diversity. This is the popular trekking destination for mountain views and the ancient monasteries, other natural beauty. This area offers perfect views of the Larkya La peak, Mt. Manaslu (8,156 meter), Himalchuli, Buddha Himal and many more. And this is the excellent site to observe the Tibetan culture, people and their tradition. Tremendous Bhudhi Gandaki River, glacier green lake Birendra; which locate on the lap of the Manaslu, greenery pine forest side and rhododendron blooming in spring, monasteries, chhorten and bhuddhist flag are the jewelry of Manaslu region. Larkya La pass, Rupina La pass, Samagaon, Bhimtang, Samdo is the major attraction of this area for the visitor.

Best season to visit:
In the spring (March to May) when the rhododendrons, the national flower of Nepal, are in bloom. Also in the fall (September to November) or post-monsoon when the weather is temperate and the skies are clear.

Trek Grade: Difficult. This is a difficult trek especially while crossing Larkye La. Some mountaineering skills required.

Maximum altitude: 5213m at Larkye La.

Length of trek: It is advisable to spend two and half weeks along this route to fully experience the full scenic and cultural splendor.

Accommodations: This trek is organized as a fully camping trek as the valley floor can provide comfortable camping spots in good weather some parts of the way. Camping trek rates and fees are considerably higher as more resources are required.

Additional Information: The crossing of Larkye La can be dangerous at times, especially during unexpected snowfall and Altitude sickness so potential trekkers must make sure that they are well prepared and equipped for all eventualities.  Our experienced porters/guides will help you to avoid potentially unsafe situations.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 01: Kathmandu to Arughat (670m) to Labu Besi (950m): Drive & Trek
Morning drive approximately 06 hours to Arughat and trek to Labu Besi. overnight camp at Labu Besi.

Day 02: Labu Besi - Khola Besi (950m): Trek
Trek to Khola Besi. Today walk will be about 04:30 hours. The trail goes along the river, with some steep legs. Overnight  camp Khola Besi.

Day 03: Khola Besi - Jagat (1410m): Trek
We head upstream along the steep side of the Buri Gandaki towards Tatopani -- literally " hot springs ". The trail then goes up and down along the length of the river, with some parts overhanging huge rapids. Today walk will be about 05:30hours. Overnight  camp at Jagat.

Day 04: Jagat to Seirishon Goan (1420m): Trek
Walk up to Seirishon Gaon about six hours. Overnight camp at Seirishon Gaon.

Day 05: Seirishon Gaon to Deng (1860m): Trek
Trek up to Deng  about  5:30 hours. Overnight camp at Deng.

Day 06: Deng - Ghap (2040m): Trek
The path goes through dense jungle up the narrow western gorge of the Buri Gandaki heading towards Manaslu. At times the path is high above the river which we will cross and re-cross on an incredible variety of bridges. In Ghap, we will admire some fine sculptures, mostly representing meditating Buddhas. We will walk about 05:30 hours and overnight camp at Ghap.

Day 07: Ghap - Lho (3100m): Trek
We continue westwards through bamboo and rhododendron forests. Horse and yak caravans are numerous here, as the commerce with the upper Buri Gandaki valley and Tibet is prosperous. Our today's walk will be about 05:30 hours and overnight camp at Lho .

Day 08: Lho - Sama Gompa (3500m) : Trek
We head straight towards Peak 29, ahead of us, then follow the lateral moraine of the Pungen Glacier towards Sama. Breathtaking views of the Manaslu, Northern Manaslu (7145m) and the Naike. Our today's walk will be about 05:30 hours and overnight camp at Sama Gompa.

Day 09: Sama Gompa Rest: Acclimatization
To adjust with altitude, we'll take rest, explore around the valley. Overnight camp at same place.

Day 10: Sama Gompa - Samdo (3860m): Trek
We cross a high plateau and skirt around the ridge of the lateral moraine. We then climb a terraced hillside to reach one of the most remote permanent settlements in Nepal. Samdo is only a day’s walk from Tibet by the Lajyang La pass (5098m). Today, we'll walk about 03:30 hours. Overnight camp at Samdo.

Day 11: Samdo – Larkya refuge (4500m): Trek
Walk up about 05:30 hours. The path becomes steeper. Crossing the tundra, it winds its way to the foot of the immense Larkya glacier which pours out of the Manaslu. Ovenight camp at Larkya Refugee.

Day 12: Larkya refuge - Larkya La (5212m) - Bimtang (3850m) : Trek
Crossing day of the Larkya La! Difficult and more exciting day! We will walk about 07:30 hours today. We first head towards Cho Chanda, then slowly climb the steep slope towards the pass. From the top the panorama is magnificent: Himlung Himal (7126m), Cheo Himal (6820m), Gyagi Kung, Kang Kuru (6981m) and the Annapurna II (7937m). Steep descent through moraines towards Bimtang. Overnight camp Bimtang.

Day 13: Bimtang - Tilije (2400m): Trek
The route gets easier. We start with a gentle climb through paddy fields towards the small Karcha La pass and descend through fir tree and rhododendron forests to Tillije. Our wallk will be around 06:00 hours today. Overnight camp at Tilije.

Day 14: Tilije – Tal (1700m: Trek
We descend to Dharapani and join the Annapurna Circuit about 04:30 hours walk. From here we follow the Marsyangdi river upstream through large areas of blue pines, spruces and oak. Overnight camping at Tal or take teahouse lodge.

Day 15: Tal - Ghermo phat (1200m): Trek
Walk up to 05:30 hours. Overnight camp at Ghermo Phat.

Day 16: Ghermo Phat - Ngadi / Bhulbhule (1100m)
Walk up to 05:30 hours. Overnight camp at Ngadi / Bhulbhule.

Day 17: Ngadi / Bhulbhule to Kathmandu: Drive
Morning drive back to Kathmandu. Overnight at hotel.
