Everest Classic (Jiri to Everest Base Camp)Trek -23 Days
Retrace the footsteps of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. Enjoy the hospitality of Sherpa village life. Brush against the majesty of Mt. Everest. These are only a few of the experiences that await you in the fabled Solu-Khumbu region of Nepal.
Starting with a 6 hour (188km/118miles) drive to Jiri (2,100m/6,888ft), this trekking to Everest Base Camp, follows the traditional route taken by the early Everest expeditions and still serves as main artery to the roadless Sagarmatha (Everest) region. Known as the Solu-Khumbu it is the home of the Sherpas. This relatively tiny society of 8,000 people is the best known and most admired of all Nepal's ethnic groups. According to their oral history Sherpas migrated to high valleys south of Mt. Everest from eastern Tibet about 450 years ago, hence the name Shar-pa, "peoples of the east." Many families along this route have converted their homes into trekkers' lodges catering to foreign hikers. Although a popular trekking route the Everest area is visited by only some 8,000 visitors each year - a fraction of the number that visits the Annapurna region. Trekking through the Sherpa villages we share many of their hearths and enjoy their generous hospitality. Trekking in from Jiri has the advantage of helping you to acclimatize en route. This trek is about 190km/120miles long and the total altitude gained on the innumerable uphill portions totals 9000m - much higher even than Mt. Everest! After Namche we follow the main trail to base camp (as per the 14-day Close Encounter With Everest itinerary) with all its attraction. A legendary trekking to a legendary destination - Everest base camp in Nepal.

Day 01: Arrival to Kathmandu, then transfer to hotel, preparation for trekking. Welcome dinner will be provided in the evening at typical Nepalese style.
Day 02: Kathmandu to Jiri (2370m) (188 km/ 7-8 hours): Drive by bus/jeep.
Day 03: Jiri to bhandar
Today we begin our assault on the Everest Base Camp with a steady climb through the diminutive Tamang villages. Our beveled path will take us through open meadows and woodland before losing altitude and stopping in Shivalaya. From Shivalaya, it is a determined hike to the top of the Deorali Pass (2705m), and then a brief walk to Bhandar, a Sherpa village besieged with small gompas (Buddhist temples) and prayer walls.
Day 04: Bhandar to Sete: Trek.
Our route takes us down towards the Linkhu Khola before crossing it on the way to Kenja (1570m). The ascent to Lamjura Bhanjyang starts before reaching Sete.
Day 05: Sete to Junbesi: Trek.
Breakfast will be followed by a gradual climb up through the Lamjura Pass (3530m) between Jiri and Namche Bazaar. With the trail descending through fir and rhododendron forest, we eventually reach Taktor and then continue on before finding Sherpa village of Junbesi.
Day 06: Junbesi to Nunthala: Trek.
Departing Junbesi we stumble upon a trail junction, from where we take the left-hand side that ascends uphill. From the Dudhkoshi River, the trail clambers upward to Ringmo and the Trak Shidno Pass through rather thick dense forest before reaching Nunthala (2320m).
Day 07: Nunthala to Bupsadanda (2300m): Trek.
Descending to the Dudh Koshi River, the trail meanders steeply through the forest until it eventually overlooks the river. We’ll accompany the Dudhkoshi through the surrounding forests and terraces and all the way to the Rai village of Jubing (1667m). From here we will push ahead to the village of Khari Khola (2004m) and on to Bupsadanda.
Day 08: Bupsadanda to Surke: Trek.
From the village of Khari Khola, we will cross a small stream of the same name via suspension bridge. A firm climb to Bhupsa (2300m) precedes the ascent through the valley where, on occasion, we may be greeted by tribes of languor monkeys investigating our rather abrupt intrusion. Pushing through to the north side of the valley, we arrive at Surke.
Day 09: Surke to Phakding (2610m): Trek.
The trail escalates to the ridge (2800m), and then descends to Sukh (2293m) via a tributary of the Dudh Koshi. After circling the village of Sukh (Buwa) from above, the pathway heads due north to Chaurikharka (2713m) but not before revealing magnificent views of the yawning gorge and its waterfall.
Day 10: Phakding to Namche (3446m): Trek.
Leaving Phakding, the path leads us north through the Dudh Koshi valley and sits 100m above the river along the west bank. After reaching Jorsale (2810m), we enter Sagarmatha National Park where our trekking permits will be submitted to the local authorities for inspection. As the trail becomes significantly steeper en route to the spectacular Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar (3440m), we will cross the suspension bridge perched high above the Bhote and Dudh Koshi rivers. Shortly thereafter we catch our first glimpse of the mighty Mount Everest, away to the north east. Situated high on the hillside, we will rest amongst the splendor of the Himalayas and in the protection of the stout Mount Kwangde (6011m).
Day 11: Rest at Namche Bazaar: Acclimatization.
The dreaminess of Namche will provide an ideal spot for a little rest and relaxation as we acclimatize to the lower pressure and thinner air at high altitude. You may wander the streets of Namche browsing the local shops, visiting the local museum with exhibits of the flora, fauna, and history of the Everest region, or simply sit back and enjoy the view. Another option is to hike to some of the nearby Sherpa villages such as Kunde and Khumjung, or, take a more strenuous walk to Thame.
Day 12: Namche Bazaar to Tengboche (3867m): Trek.
Departing to the north east, our ensuing trail will see us on a direct line to Everest high above the Dudh Koshi. From this path a stunningly beautiful mountain that many people who visit the area will consider the best in the region emerges – Ama Dablam (6812m). For several days, Ama Dablam will dominate the eastern sky for anyone trekking to Mount Everest. After passing through Sanasa we will descend to the Dudh Koshi and the small village of Phunki Thanga. From here it is an extended climb up the hill where to the Tengpoche monastery (3870m), and perhaps the most breathtaking mountain panorama in the world.
Day 13: Tengboche to Pheriche (4252m): Trek.
Moving forward, the trail gravitates down and across the Imja Khola and on to the village of Pangboche (3,900m). Here we may have the unique opportunity to visit the monastery that is said to house the scalp and fingers, from a Yeti.
Day 14: Rest day at Pheriche: Acclimatization.
The second of our acclimatization days will be held in Pheriche and will again allow the group to adjust to the altitude. You may enjoy the surrounding area with a side trip to Chhukung (4730m), or a climb to the ridge above Dingboche.
Day 15: Pheriche to Lobuche (4910m): Trek.
Ascending up the small ridge above Dingboche, we continue northwards and contour around the base of the Khumbu Glacier, where we take a steep ascent to the terminal moraine of the glacier. Proceeding higher up on the moraine towards a leveled area, we encounter commemorative shrines to the mountaineers who have lost their lives in the Khumbu region. The peaks consisting of part of the Everest cordillera, and those that form the border with Tibet, will salute us from the head of the Khumbu Valley proper. The trail is cut from the western side of the valley and ultimately reaches Lobuche (4930m). The massive peak of Nuptse (7879m) arrogantly announces itself from a distance, foolishly convinced that she dominates the Himalayan skyline.
Day 16: Lobuche to Gorakshep (5160m) and Everest Base Camp (5360m: Trek.
Leaving in the early hours of the morning from Lobuche, our direction leads us west along the Khumbu Valley through alpine meadows and slopes. It is here that our altitude will reach 5000m for the first time, and it will be important to proceed slowly to avoid any undue altitude illnesses. Pumori (7145m) will concede its grandeur as it comes in to view and towers protectively over its lesser neighbor Kala Pattar (5545m). It is at this point that we shall bask in her majesty’s glory as the best vantage points for viewing Mount Everest are revealed.
Day 17: Gorak Shep to Kalapatthar (5545m) and Lobuche: Trek.
The enormity of Everest can now be seen and realized. The South Col from which Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzig Norgay made their first ascent in 1953 – is clearly visible. Time will be reserved here to be spent taking photographs and marveling at the sight of the mighty mountain before descending back to Gorak Shep and beginning our trek home.
Day 18: Lobuche to Dingboche: Trek.
A short descent from Lobouche to Thukla followed by a manageable hike down to Dingboche, the highest Sherpa settlement in the Khumbu region.
Day 19: Dingboche to Tengboche: Trek.
Advancing further on our descent, Ama Dablam (6856m) bids farewell from far off in the distance providing the perfect backdrop for personal reflection, and a stunning reminder of your most recent accomplishment.
Day 20: Tengboche to Namche Bazaar: Trek.
Led back via a steep descent through the lush countryside, a plethora of bird species will serenade our parade back to Namche Bazaar.
Day 21: Namche Bazaar to Lukla: Trek.
The final day of trekking is bittersweet as the familiarity of the path already trodden unfolds, heralding the end of our sojourn in the Himalayas. Until, that is, the siren call of Everest and her subjects beckons once again.
Day 22: Lukla to Kathmandu: Fly to Kathmandu (45 minutes).
The flight back to Kathmandu from Lulkla will be a short and serene 45 minutes. Upon arrival you may be greeted and transferred to your hotel where you may commit to memory, once and for all, the experiences of the last few weeks.
Day 23: Departure to your home country or continuously other trip to Nepal.
